As part of a series of freelance projects in summer 2018, I partnered with a client to design a mobile app that helps golfers improve their swing. It brings recording, analysis, and personalized training together into one coaching experience.
Opportunity
Golfers struggle to track and improve their swing without expensive equipment or in-person coaching. The client saw an opening for a mobile app that let people record and save their swings, analyze the mechanics, and reach training content built around what they found.
The design had to work for amateurs and seasoned players at once, which mostly meant making technical feedback readable — a number or an overlay is only useful if you know what to do with it next.
What I did
- Ran competitive analysis and stakeholder interviews to understand user needs and the features that mattered.
- Designed a navigation system simple enough to move between recording, analysis, and training without getting lost.
- Created wireframes and high-fidelity mockups that set the app's structure and look.
- Developed the flows for swing recording, analysis, and building a training plan.
- Designed a profile and progress tracker so people could see improvement over time.
- Delivered clickable prototypes and production-ready specs for development.
Working out the flows
I sketched both core journeys on paper before moving into high fidelity: recording and reviewing a swing, and browsing training videos to build a plan.
Working at that size let me see a whole journey at once, which is how I caught the screens with nowhere to go back to and the states I'd have otherwise designed twice.
Outcome
The final design pulled swing recordings, analysis, and tailored training plans into one place, so improving a swing didn't depend on booking time with a coach.
